Montreal's biggest comedy export, Sugar Sammy is a textbook example of a comic who made it happen all by himself. We discuss the cultural currents involved with his ability to headline a show in four different languages; his focus on quality control, from pruning his online presence to interviewing audience-members post-show; and find out why he wants to get better at holding his nerve...

The Comedian's Comedian WITH STUART GOLDSMITH
For anyone who writes comedy, makes comedy, loves comedy, or just has an interest in comedians and what makes them so annoying.
Possessed of an inordinate self-belief, Liza Treyger is one of the sharpest, funniest comics ever to not give a shit what you think of her. Named one of Variety's "Ten To Watch" at this year's Just For Laughs, the Odessa-born firebrand discusses how a trip to Palm Springs with a stylist changed her brain; her self-sabotage techniques; wanting women to have a great time, and how to tell which couples in an audience aren't fucking.

Comedy powerhouse Kamau finds time in-between podcasting, writing, and hosting the Emmy Award nominated "United Shades of America"on CNN, to produce deliriously funny sociopolitical standup. We talk about swerving the obvious joke, the balance of vulnerability and power, and find out why even Chris Rock said Kamau talks too much about racism...

Comments: No CommentsVenezuelan Ivan is a comic powerhouse, with an intensely scientific approach underpinning his sensual performance. Self-taught by translating classic routines into Spanish, he's achieved a genuine mastery of the ingredients necessary for faultless joke structure; as soon as he starts outlining Louis CK's "foundational premise", you'll be hooked...

Comments: No CommentsResponsible for some of the funniest and most intelligent one-liners in the world, Simon Munnery has a brain like none other. Rarely will you find another comic so enthralled by serving "the idea", whether through Kierkegaardian prose or innovative but unreliable technology. Simon reveals his approach to writing epigrammatic jokes, and Stu gently bullies him into trying harder to get back on TV.

Comments: No CommentsSince the 1980’s Jo Brand has been synonymous with the best of British comedy, rising to the top of the industry at a time when female comics were outnumbered sixteen to one. We find out whether her grumpiness is an act, applaud her resilience in the face of some of the disgraceful things people have said to her, and discover her feelings about the place of “fat” jokes in a perhaps more progressive 2017.
Very strong language from the beginning of the episode.

Comments: No CommentsA punchline powerhouse with a genuinely unique act, Lee Ridley is adept at skewering his audience’s unspoken prejudices. Unable to speak due to his cerebral palsy, Lee communicates entirely through an electronic aid, on- and off-stage. We discuss how he overcomes the specific challenges this presents to a comic, and learn in more than usual detail how he “found his voice”. And why he chose that accent…
